Information and guidance system of Lutherstadt Wittenberg for visually impaired and blind visitors

The historical sights in Wittenberg are described by information steles.

There are two tactile QR codes (German and English) on the object steles (height: 2.05 m / width: 0.40 m). These two codes are mounted at a height of approx. 1.30 m and are accompanied by an audio file. The German QR code is on the left. The English QR code is on the right.

Smaller inclined displays (height: 1.13 m / width: 0.40 m) complement the signage system as a further source of information based on the same principle. The tactile QR codes are located here at a height of 0.85 metres.

UNESCO World Heritage Site Castle Church

Castle Square

"A strong fortress is our God". The phrase is written in large letters on the tower of the church. This well-known phrase is from the Bible and a hymn. The hymn was written by the reformer Martin Luther. The castle church was built in 1506 on the foundations of the old castle. Martin Luther made the building famous worldwide. On October 31, 1517, he is said to have posted his famous 95 theses on the door of the church. The theses were against the sale of indulgences. Today there is a memorial plaque at the site.
The tombs of Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon can be seen in the church. Both are important figures in the Reformation.

UNESCO World Heritage Site St. Mary's Church

Church Square 20

St. Mary's Church is the oldest building in the city. The reformer Martin Luther preached in this church. The famous painter Lucas Cranach the Elder designed the Reformation altar. The altar depicts the contents of faith and the Reformation. Valuable panel paintings from Cranach's workshop hang on the walls. The pictures are painted on wooden panels. Herrmann Fischer the Elder designed the baptismal font. It is the oldest piece in the church.

Melanchthon House UNESCO World Heritage Site

The house is built in the Renaissance style. Today it is an architectural treasure. The professor and reformer Philipp Melanchthon lived and worked here. That is why it is called the Melanchthon House.
There is an exhibition in the new building. This deals with the deeds and work of Melanchthon. Manuscripts, prints, paintings and busts are on display here. Some items have never been shown before. These include an original salary certificate from Professor Melanchthon and the first town history of Wittenberg. Melanchthon wrote down the history of the town himself.

UNESCO World Heritage Site Luther House

Collegienstrasse 54

The house was built in 1504 as an Augustinian monastery. It was later the home of the reformer Martin Luther. Today, the Luther House is the world's largest museum on the history of the Reformation. The house is on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The exhibition in the Luther House presents the time of the Reformation. Many original exhibits tell the story of Martin Luther's life and work as a reformer. The everyday life of the Luther family and the impact of the Reformation are shown.

Luther Garden

Andreasbreite

2017 marked the 500th anniversary of the posting of the theses. A tree was planted in the new Luther Garden for each year. This turned the city's ramparts into a green park. The trees can be found on Andreasbreite, by the Luther House and the New Town Hall.

Churches from all over the world have sponsored a tree. A tree was also planted at the sponsor's home church. The tree species come from all continents of the world.

futurea Science Center

The "futurea" Science Center is located on the historic market square. The building was already there in Luther's time. Today, the museum offers an entertaining and playful approach to modern chemistry. What do Third World hunger and daily dental care have to do with Wittenberg's market square? Find out at the "futurea" Science Center. Here you can not only see with your eyes, but also with your hands.

Zoo

Wittenberg Zoo is located directly in the town park. It is one of the smallest zoos in Germany. It has the only cold-water aquarium in Saxony-Anhalt. It offers around 25 different species of fish from the Elbe-Elster region. The enclosures at Wittenberg Zoo are home to 15 species of mammals and over 20 species of birds. There are also four species of monkeys, meerkats, parrots, goats, sheep and much more.

Exhibition: Christian art in the 20th century

Schlossplatz 1 (access via the visitor center of the castle church)

In Wittenberg you can see a special collection of prints. The exhibition shows pictures with Christian themes. The pictures were created by internationally renowned artists. You can expect to see works by Marc Chagall, Otto Dix, Max Pechstein, Joseph Beuys and many other artists.
The exhibition consists of the collection of the Wittenberg Christian Art Foundation. The couple Dr. Gisela Meister-Scheufelen and Dr. Ulrich Scheufelen established this foundation in 2001.

Zeughaus am Arsenalplatz/City Collections

Juristenstrasse 16a

The exhibition offers insights into the past, present and future of Arsenalplatz and its buildings. One of the buildings is the artillery carriage house. Today, the house houses the exhibition of the Municipal Collections of Lutherstadt Wittenberg. Various areas make up the municipal collections. These include the city history collection and the natural history and ethnological collections of Julius Riemer.

Monastery Church - Historical City Information Center

Mauerstraße 18

Wittenberg was an important town long before the Reformation. Rudolf the 2nd chose the city as his seat of power in 1356. He was Elector of Saxony-Wittenberg and an Ascanian. The Ascanians belonged to the nobility and were the origin of today's Saxony-Anhalt. The history of the Ascanians is on display in the former monastery church.

Alaris Butterfly Park

The Alaris Butterfly Park is one of the largest in Germany. Hundreds of butterflies fly around visitors among palm trees, coffee bushes, orchids and exotic plants. Observe numerous butterflies in a completely natural tropical landscape. Over 140 species from all over the world and in different sizes and colors can be experienced.

Piesteritz factory estate

Karl-Liebknecht-Platz 20

The housing estate was built by urban planner Georg Haberland and architect Otto Rudolf Salvisberg in 1916. The houses were intended to have a lasting quality. The result is a beautiful housing estate for workers that belongs together.
The Piesteritzer Werksiedlung is the first car-free housing estate in Germany. The estate was renovated according to the original plans for the EXPO world exhibition in 2000.

Cranach Houses and Cranach Courtyards

Markt 4 and Schlossstraße 1

The residential building at Markt 4 dates from the Renaissance period. The painter Lucas Cranach the Elder and the printer Christian Döring had a print shop here. Martin Luther's translation of the Bible was printed here. This printed translation is also known as the September Testament.
The painter Cranach expanded his workshop. In 1518, he bought the courtyard at Schlossstraße 1, which was the largest in Wittenberg at the time. Here he traded in paper, paints, sugar, wax and spices. Both buildings are now protected as monuments.

Schlossstraße 6

Embark on a journey into the past. You will learn about unique shapes and the design of objects. The objects are from the period from 1940 to 1980. Learn more about everyday life in the former GDR (German Democratic Republic).

Hundertwasser School

The well-known artist Friedensreich Hundertwasser redesigned the outdated school in 1993. Today the school appears in the Hundertwasser style. Artists and pupils have designed the school in Hundertwasser's style. The school stands out with its many bright colors, shapes and planted roofs.
There is an information room for visitors. Here visitors can learn all about the school from information boards, pictures and books. You can also buy Hundertwasser books and products here.
