Permanent exhibition with special installations

Experience the history of the Ascanians up close - that is the central point of the exhibition. With impressive light installations, superimposition technology and projections, visitors are given the feeling of being in the original 13th century cathedral. Travel back in time, take in the projections and imagine what it must have felt like to stand in this huge cathedral in the 13th century. Experience unique insights into a time and noble family that almost fell into oblivion after their extinction in 1422. For the first time in history, the Historical City Information Center is focusing on the rule of the Ascanians. And at the place where the noble family's burial site and most important residence was located.

History rediscovered

A far-reaching discovery during construction work in 2009 meant that the history of Lutherstadt had to be rethought. The burial place of Duke Rudolf II of Saxony-Wittenberg was found on the site of the old Franciscan monastery, where the monastery church and historical town information center now stand. He ruled as elector from 1356 to 1370. This makes it clear that the Ascanian family ruled the city long before the Reformation. This sensational find has led to a unique way of bringing you closer to the history of the Ascanians in and around Wittenberg.
