Castle church with theses door

Perhaps the most famous door in the world

Wittenberg Castle Church is probably the most famous and most popular destination in the old town of Wittenberg. The world-famous Thesis Door, today a popular photo motif, is no longer the original door on which Luther probably posted his 95 theses. The door that now stands in this place is cast in bronze and bears Luther's theses. The castle tower, visible from afar, is framed by a line from one of Luther's hymns: "A strong fortress is our God." The tower originally belonged to Wittenberg Castle along with a second, demolished tower. The castle church has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996.

The nave

The interior of the church is also impressive. Both Martin Luther and Philipp Melanchthon found their final resting place here and visitors can pay a visit to their tombs. In addition, the larger-than-life statues of nine key figures of the Reformation adorn the wall pillars of the church.

The castle church is still actively used for church services, during which time the interior of the church is only open to those attending the service. Outside of services, the church is open to all visitors. Public guided tours also take place regularly.

The castle

The renovated castle, to which the castle church originally belonged, is now available to visitors as a meeting and information center. Until the renovation, which was completed in 2016, the castle had been through some exciting times. Numerous conversions, fires, war and changes of use have shaped the appearance of the castle, including the castle church.

The permanent exhibition in the castle houses the graphic art collections of the Christian Art Foundation as well as changing special exhibitions on religious themes. If you climb the castle tower, you will have a unique view over Wittenberg and the surrounding nature parks.
