From lignite to a tourist destination

Experience the time of lignite mining in a different way

On the former Golpa Nord lignite mining site in Gräfenhainichen, you can visit and in some cases even climb disused mining equipment in impressive surroundings. Based on an idea from Bauhaus Dessau, the site was transformed into an anchor point of the European Route of Industrial Culture during Expo 2000. The huge pieces of equipment give you a unique impression of how lignite was mined in central Germany until the 1990s. In Ferropolis, you will visit a museum, an industrial monument, an event area and a theme park all at the same time. Surrounded by the newly created Gremminer Lake, Ferropolis also lies in the midst of dreamlike nature.

Impressive evidence of open pit mining

The centerpiece of Ferropolis' attractions is, of course, the former mining equipment, which gives you an extraordinary impression of the actual scale of lignite mining. The equipment is truly impressive contemporary witnesses of lignite mining in Central Germany. The Mad Max bucket chain excavator, the Gemini and Medusa skip loaders, the Big Wheel bucket wheel excavator and the crawler column slewing excavator tower gigantically into the sky here. It is the contrast with the surrounding nature that makes the sight of the large machines so fascinating.

Ferropolis is a very special experience in the evening, because when it gets dark, colored spotlights bathe the impressive mining equipment in a colorful sea of lights. Ferropolis also offers the possibility of sporting activities. The latest sport you can indulge in the city of steel is skiking. In addition, cross golfing, geocaching and quad tours are possible on the grounds. All by yourself, you can climb the Gemini skip - provided you are good on your feet and free from vertigo.
