Wittenberg is far more than just a historic town – it is a living experience where history comes to life at every turn. The famous Castle Church, on whose door Martin Luther is said to have nailed his 95 Theses in 1517, forms the starting point for a journey through time. The Augusteum, with its special exhibition “LITERALLY LUTHER – Facets of a Reformer”, invites visitors to an in-depth encounter with the reformer. The Luther House is currently undergoing energy-efficiency refurbishment and will reopen with a new permanent exhibition in 2027.
Equally significant is St Mary’s Church, where Luther preached and Cranach worked – a place that to this day combines spiritual and cultural significance. The historic old town, with its lovingly restored buildings, narrow lanes and lively squares, makes Wittenberg an ideal destination for culture lovers, families and history enthusiasts.
Another significant site is the Melanchthon House, which was the home and workplace of Philipp Melanchthon, Martin Luther’s close companion. This UNESCO World Heritage Site now houses a museum and offers fascinating insights into the life and work of the humanist and reformer.

Lutherstadt Eisleben
As the birthplace and final resting place of Martin Luther, Lutherstadt Eisleben is closely linked to the Reformation. He was born here in 1483 and baptised with his name; he grew up not far away in Mansfeld. Today’s UNESCO World Heritage sites – Luther’s Birthplace and the Museum of Luther’s Death – are among the town’s most significant attractions. At the Luther Birthplace Museum, visitors gain an insight into the history of Luther’s family and the region. The Museum of Luther’s Death House sheds light on his final days. But the city’s churches are also closely linked to Luther’s life – he was baptised in St. Petri-Pauli Church the day after his birth, and he delivered his final sermons in St. Andreas Church before his death in 1546. The pulpit from which he spoke has been preserved in its original form and can still be admired in the church today. With the Birth House and the Death House, the city preserves two authentic sites that impressively document the most important stages of Luther’s life. In Luther’s birthplace, visitors gain an insight into Luther’s origins and childhood. The house where he died, on the other hand, commemorates his final journey and the events surrounding his death. Both houses vividly convey the story of the Reformer and bring to life the beginnings and the end of the Reformation in Eisleben.
