Historic Town Information Center
Experience electoral history in the new Historic Town Information Center in Lutherstadt Wittenberg.
In 2009, workers discovered during construction work on the site of the old Franciscan monastery in Wittenberg, the tomb of the Duke Rudolf II, of Saxony-Wittenberg, who reigned from 1356 to 1370 as an elector. The Duke belonged to the family of the Ascanians, a German ancient noble family, which was influential in the history of Saxony-Anhalt.
With the Historic Town Information Center in October 2015, the last element of the visitor center has been completed on Arsenalplatz Wittenberg. The other three parts of the visitor center are the Townhouse, the Council Archive, and the Tourist- Information. Guests to Wittenberg are welcomed here with information about their visit and get an overview of the history of the city.
In the permanent exhibition of the Historic Town Information Center, see details on the ruling dynasty of Ascanians and the impact they have made to the city of Wittenberg, Saxony-Anhalt, and the entire central area of Germany. The exhibition is biographically oriented and brings visitors closer the history of the dynasty in a unique way. After the extinction of the Ascanians, in 1422, her story is unfortunately forgotten. Therefore, the Historic Town Information Center is a unique source of information about the ancient dynasty. For the first time in history, the rule of Ascanians is placed at the center of a presentation - at the place where the family grave lay the noble family and their most important residence were.
The exceptional interior design combines medieval imagery with monumental art and was developed by the State Office for Heritage and Archaeology Saxony-Anhalt. In the premises of the Historic Town Information Center classical blending in technique and projections ensure that you feel, as if you are standing in a magnificent old cathedral.
