German Evangelical Church Convention
In the anniversary year of the Reformation, the Evangelical Church of Germany will be celebrating a Church Convention of a very novel kind.
On the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in 2017, the German Evangelical Church Convention will offer Christians of all confessions from the whole world a varied program for watching, listening and joining in. The starting gun for the anniversary year will be fired on 31 October 2016. Various events will provide information on the subject of Luther and the Reformation until the summer of 2017. One highlight of the Reformation celebrations will be the 36th German Evangelical Convention in Berlin and Wittenberg from 24-28 May 2017.
The Church Convention in Berlin and Wittenberg
The Evangelical Church of Berlin-Brandenburg-schlesische Oberlausitz and the Evangelical Church of central Germany are organizing the Convention and will be staging a series of events for interested visitors. In Berlin, the Church Convention has found an experienced organizer who will work with Lutherstadt Wittenberg in the anniversary year of the Reformation.
More than 2,000 different individual events will be held as part of the Convention from Wednesday 24.05.2017 until Sunday 28.05.2017. The main venue for these events will be Berlin although an events center will also be set up in Wittenberg. Special trains will be laid on for the Church Convention which will take visitors from Berlin to Wittenberg in only 50 minutes.
The German Evangelical Church Convention for 2017 will focus on subjects which capture the spirit of the times. Panel discussions, debates, presentations and workshops will explore international ecumenism as well as inter-religious dialogue. They will also risk a peek into the future by asking how the Evangelical faith can contribute to a better future in the next 500 years. Well-known speakers are expected who will tackle these subjects in a dialogue with visitors.
Six Church Conventions in eight towns
With their Church Convention roadshow, the organizers of the German Evangelical Church Convention have conceived something very special for the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. From 24.-27.05.2017, you can find out more about Luther and the Reformation in eight central German towns. The towns of Leipzig, Magdeburg, Erfurt, Jena/Weimar, Dessau-Roßlau, Halle (Saale)/Lutherstadt Eisleben will offer varied agendas that reflect the identity and history of each town. All the towns have a special affinity with Luther or the Evangelical Church.
One genuine highlight will be provided by the ecumenical Ascension Day service which will take place simultaneously in all the towns on 24.05.2017 which will build metaphorical bridges between the towns hosting the church conventions roadshow themselves and the conventions in Berlin and Wittenberg.
Concluding celebratory service in Lutherstadt Wittenberg
The celebratory conclusion to the Evangelical Church Convention on Sunday, 28 May 2017 will also be held in Wittenberg. A celebratory service will be held at 12 noon before the gates of Lutherstadt which will be dedicated to the Reformation and the themes of the convention. With the panorama of the town in the background in which Luther nailed his 95 theses to the church door, thereby making a decisive contribution towards changing the history of the Church in the whole world, faith will be celebrated and thanks given to God for his grace.
Following the service, there will be a party on the site of the service where participants can continue their discussions and look into the future.
