Discover history & culture

Look forward to exciting insights into the history and culture of Wittenberg! Since Wittenberg is considered the starting point of the Reformation, many of the city's museums naturally focus on the movement that was started here by Martin Luther. To learn about the Reformation in general and its central figures and ideas, you can visit the Cranach Houses and Cranach Courts, the Luther House and the Augusteum. The Cranach Houses and Cranach Courts house the former homes and workplaces of Lucas Cranach the Elder and Lucas Cranach the Younger. Today, the Cranach House houses the exhibition "Lucas Cranach the Elder - Pages of an Artist's Life," while the Cranach Courtyard houses a historic printer's room. In the Luther House, Martin Luther's former home and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can visit the largest museum of Reformation history in the world. The newest exhibition rooms with changing exhibitions are located in the

Augusteum, the front building of the Luther House. In addition to interesting facts about the Reformation, Lutherstadt Wittenberg also has an exciting history outside of this event. For example, check out the archaeological exhibition in the Alte Canzley to learn more about the origins of the city. For history that doesn't date back so long, the Wittenberg House of History is recommended. This collection looks at everyday life for people from the 1920s to the 1990s. Travel back through time and experience typical living spaces of different generations of the 20th century. If you are more interested in art, the collection of the Christian Art Foundation Wittenberg in the castle is interesting for you. Here you will find changing exhibitions that present works of art from the end of the 19th century to the present day.
