The Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz

Wörlitzer Park

The UNESCO-protected castles, gardens and smaller architectures extend on 112 hectares.

Take the opportunity during your stay in Wittenberg to travel to Wörlitz. The small, about 1000 years old town is situated between Wittenberg and Dessau, embedded in the meadowlands of the Elbe.

Castle and Garden Wörlitz

Wörlitzer Schloss

Wörlitz offers a beautifully landscaped garden, which was planted at the end of the 18th century and is one of the earliest and most important landscape gardens in the English style on the European continent. The Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz was created by Prince Leopold III and Friedrich Franz of Anhalt-Dessau (1740-1817). He strove with its various reforms to a harmonious relationship between human and nature. Castles, gardens, and avenues of the Garden Kingdom are naturally embedded in the floodplain that gives the whole area the character of a park of infinite space.

The Garden Kingdom consists of five gardens on a total of 112 hectares, nestled at the Wörlitz lake. In the complex you will encounter other lakes and channels that you can cross on ferries, bridges, and roads. You can experience Wörlitz in many different ways and explore.

Castle and Garden Luisium

Lying in Dessau's district Waldersee country, the seat of Princess Louise of Anhalt-Dessau, counts as the idyllic park of the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz. Prince Franz of Anhalt-Dessau had built the little cottage as a private residence for his wife, who is named after the park at the same time. The castle is surrounded by an English landscape garden, in its natural landscape blend the garden architectures snake house (after the shape of its gutters), the Orangery, the Gate House, and the Ruined Arch.

The Luisium was severely affected by the flooding of the Elbe and the Mulde in 2002, but could, with the support of the Federal and State Government eliminate any damage.

Castle and Garden Georgium

Schloss Georgium

The Georgium is next to the Wörlitz Park, it is the most important historical landscape park of English style in the Garden Kingdom of Dessau-Wörlitz and was created by Prince Johann Georg and is named after him.
He also founded north of the city Dessau, in a floodplain forest, a small ne-classical country house. The lavish garden is similar to Wörlitz, numerous neo-classical and romanticized park buildings and sculptures that embed themselves harmoniously in nature. The transition from the artfully landscaped garden in the natural landscape is particularly good to understand. The Elbe Pavilion and the artificial ruins of the castle "Wallwitzburg" are two points that provide a panoramic view over the gardens along the river Elbe.

Castle and Garden Mosigkau

Schloss Mosigkau

The Rococo Castle was built as a summer residence by Princess Anna Wilhelmine of Anhalt-Dessau and is known today as the "small Sanssouci". It is one of the last largely preserved Rococo ensemble in Central Germany.

Inside the castle it includes 24 rooms with partially preserved original features. The core area and highlight of the entire arrangement is the gallery, which houses a unique German Baroque hanging of important paintings in recessed wall panels. The pleasure garden of the castle is decorated with summery colorful flowers and exotic potted plants and invites you to a discovery tour through the castle's maze. In the two orangeries, old tub plants are treasured that are partially over hundreds of years old.

Castle and Garden Großkühnau

The long narrow garden was laid out along the southern shore of Lake Kühnau with its artificial islands and forms the western end of the Garden Kingdom.

A highlight of the system is the Weinberg-Castle located on a hill. This is a neo-classical building with Italianate forms. Small architectures and sculptures complete the architectural image of the garden. The design of the classical palace Kühnau and the Church are also involved.

Castle and Garden Oranienbaum

The mainly Dutch-inspired decorative complex was built for Henriette Catharina, wife of Prince Johann Georg II, of Anhalt-Dessau, as a summer residence. Prince Franz redesigned numerous rooms of the house in Chinese style. At the southern edge of the park, it was built from 1812 as one of the longest orangeries in Europe, which has since been used to house numerous citrus plants. The former island garden in baroque style was transformed into a large Anglo-Chinese garden of the 18th century. A pagoda, a tea house, and several arched bridges set the architectural highlights of this part of the garden.
