The Bauhaus Dessau
At the Bauhaus Dessau and the numerous Bauhaus buildings of the city of Dessau, you will immediately experience the beginnings of modern architecture.
In years 1925-1926 Dessau build the Bauhaus, the “Hochschule für Gestaltung” about 25 kilometers from Wittenberg. The main building of the university was designed by Walter Gropius, the then director, and is today regarded as a pioneer of modern architecture. The other Bauhaus buildings in the city are also regarded as a landmark for the architecture of th 20th century. Not least of all, the Bauhaus buildings in Dessau and Weimar were named UNESCO World Cultural Heritage sites in 1996. Not only the buildings designed by Walter Gropius were historically significant, but the philosophy with which he led the Bauhaus was exceptionally progressive.
The Bauhaus Buildings in Dessau
The Bauhaus buildings are spread over the city and include, in addition to the master houses, the settlement of Dessau-Törten, the Kornhaus, Hausfieger, the Stahlhaus, and the historic Arbeitsamt. But probably the best-known building is the actual Bauhaus, the seat of the former university of design. The design by Walter Gropius, who moved the Bauhaus from Weimar to Dessau in 1925 and erected the Bauhaus building in 1926, contained some groundbreaking innovations in the buildings concept. Gropius systematically separated the individual building sections of the Bauhaus into function and designed them accordingly. Thus the workshop wing was provided with a glass curtain façade – one of the first examples of this construction. This was intended to represent a kind of freedom and to create a connection between inside and outside. The exterior walls of the building are plastered and predominantly lined with a bright paint, which stands in stark contrast to the rather dark window front. Gropius, too, uses the freedom and ease of the Bauhaus visually. Inside, the walls were painted in a special color scheme that underlines the construction of the building.

The principle of the Bauhaus Hochschule für Gestaltung
The construction of the Bauhaus building reflects the philosophy of the university, because here the building parts were specially designed for different disciplines of art, but were connected to one another. Thus, the arts were to be united under one roof so that they could complement and work together after the individual disciplines had been differentiated more and more in earlier times. A further premise of the university and its directors was that the artist is also always a craftsman at the same time. In this context, Gropius designed a large workshop wing in the Bauhaus building that documents the importance of the production workshops. Here the countless designs of the Bauhaus students were put into reality. Moreover, with this idea, architecture was at the center of teaching.
